Seismic operations are having more of an impact on the trade routes of merchant vessels as a growing worldwide fleet of over 600 seismic vessels carrying increasingly sophisticated and expensive equipment are found in areas where you would previously have been unlikely to come across them.

There is not a great deal of general information to be found about these vessels and their equipment and what little there is provides little explanation about the nature of the problems posed, this guide aims to fill that knowledge gap.

This guide will demonstrate why OOWs must be aware of the dangers and restrictions relating to a Seismic Survey Vessel when approaching areas of oil field development or exploration.
