Cargo tank system is the most important part that dominates the reliability and building cost of a liquefied gas carrier. In the history of liquefied gas carriers many kinds of tank systems were developed. Among many independent tank systems developed, the prismatic tank system is now the most popular for large LPG carriers and spherical tank system for LNG carriers. The authors think the current systems are not ultimate and there could be a possibility of a new tank system that is as reliable as existing ones, but more economical.

The cylindrical tank system is thought to be one of the promising systems. In the early stage of the history, a cylindrical tank system was developed and built. Although the ship with this system was actually operated successfully for long years, it was not able to be a major system. The authors examined this cylindrical tank system again and developed a new cylindrical tank system considering economical efficiency as of prime importance. This paper introduces the design and evaluation of gas carriers with new cylindrical tanks from the point of view of structural design, reliability, operation and building cost.
