The average age of the world's gas carrier fleets is high and there are concerns to ensure the structural capability of these fleets and to build newer ships. Many organizations have studied the problem, and the results of their researche have been published. For example, five papers were presented at GASTECH 90. Reflecting the NK's long classification experience, the authors investigate technical problems and prevention of failures. The society's emphasis is on providing technical services by the gas project team organized by specialists.

ClassNK ADASS (Advanced total Assessment System), is advanced safe ship technology of total life assessment for design, construction, inspection-maintenance appropriate to scheduled life span. For maintenance system of machinery, Guidance for Preventive Maintenance System of Machinery is provided. Plenty of research and developments on the technique of building LNG carriers have already been carried out in the world. In Japan, comprehensive investigations, researches and developments have been carried out as well. On the basis of these results, NK have carried out technical examinations for design and construction of LNG carriers. For inspection-maintenance of LNG carriers, probabilistic failure and risk assessment is employed, developing a database based on the experience of the society. In the final stage of the paper, the authors touch on the strategy of gas carrier's life extension.
