During the past two years (to 1975), Technigaz developed a new insulation support system for its stainless steel membrane containment design. This membrane has been employed, since the Pythagore, in the construction of 12 large LNG carriers, of which eight are actually in service and which, therefore constitute the largest fleet of ships of this type actually at sea.

The 50,000 cuM Descartes, the first of the series, has been employed by Gazocean during the past four years (to 1975) for the transportation of both LNG and LPG. The Gadinia, the first of five 75,000 cuM Shell LNG carriers, has been in regular service for more than three years transporting LNG between Brunei and Japan.
