In 1980, IHI completed an LPG carrier of the 80,000 m3 class – the Genkai Maru – delivered to the Idemitsu Tanker Co., Ltd. Built to NK Rules, this ship carries four independent (self-supporting) prismatic cargo tanks of "IMO type B". The Genkai Maru has already seen almost two years of commercial service. A description will be presented in the first part of this report, together with some data obtained from actual ship measurements.

In this paper, the author will describe briefly an extensive study carried out by IHI to design LPG and LNG carriers which conform to IMO type B concept; this short paper cannot of course cover all of the information gained. Detailed findings will be published in separate papers, at a later date.
