A new generation of larger ships of all types is coming on stream into the world's ports. Handling these vessels safely demands larger, more powerful, sea-kindly and, most critically, more capable ship-handling tugs. The oil and gas industry increasingly demands tug escorts for tanker operations in sensitive near-coastal areas, but generally what is involved in these escort operations is not well understood. LNG terminals are being built in locations that are exposed to more severe wave and wind conditions than more conventional ports, but it is difficult to predict how tugs will perform in these conditions. Major challenges are thus presented to tug designers, operators, and to the tanker or ship owner alike.

However, the evolution of a completely new generation of tugboats for service in the oil and gas industry has recently begun, with unique developments on several fronts. The author's company has been engaged in an on-going internal program of research and development into improved tug design and performance. This has led to several new, unique designs that represent a new generation of high-performance tugs for improved safety and reliability of ship-handling operations, especially in support of oil and gas industry operations, in port and most particularly in offshore situations.

This paper describes the current technology of these high-performance tugs, the research which has been performed and which is ongoing to verify these designs, and some of the designs which are emerging to improve the quality of ship-handling operations, with a focus on LNG terminal operations.
