As has been introduced in several papers in the last two years IHI has developed its own LNG carrier technology;namely the 'IHI SPB LNG Carrier'.

This latest generation of LNG carrier utilises the IHI SPB containment system, a self-supporting prismatic tank system complying with the IMO Independent Tank Type B concept. The outline of this system was presented at the Gastech 82 Conference in Paris (Ref.l). In this paper further details of the system will be explained covering tank structural analyses focusing on the fatigue aspects, the tank construction procedure and the implementation of quality control, the insulation and its incorporated leak protection system, and some explanation of the cargo tank fittings and equipment
