The Maritime Safety Committee, at its fifty-ninth session (May 1991), adopted a new International Code for the Safe Carriage of Grain in Bulk (International Grain Code). This replaced the original chapter VI of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, which contained detailed regulations on the carriage of grain in bulk, with more general requirements and placed the detailed provisions on grain in a separate mandatory code.

ADOPTS the International Code for the Safe Carriage of Grain in Bulk, the text of which is set out in the Annex to the present resolution; 2. DECIDES that the Code shall take effect on 1 January 1994*; and 3. REQUESTS the Secretary-General to transmit to the Members of the Organization and all Contracting Governments to SOLAS 74 certified copies of the present resolution and the Code. * Date of entry into force of amendments to SOLAS chapter Vl.
