Seafarers often serve on different ships, which means they are sometimes unfamiliar with the lifeboats on their vessels. Accidents are frequently caused by poor understanding of lifeboat operations, particularly the release gear systems, and shortfalls in repair and maintenance procedures are also contributing factors. SKULD have developed this booklet to help prevent future lifeboat related accidents.

In a bid to curtail the number of lifeboat-related accidents, Danish P&I Club Skuld has published a book highlighting a number of common problems concerning lifeboat release systems. Review by Shipping World & Shipbuilder
In a bid to curtail the number of lifeboat-related accidents, Danish P&I Club Skuld has published a book highlighting a number of common problems concerning lifeboat release systems.
As seafarers often serve on different ships, they may be unfamiliar with a vessel’s lifeboats. Consequently accidents are frequently caused by poor understanding of lifeboat operations, particularly the release gear systems, and shortfalls in repair and maintenance.
The 45page booklet, called Lifeboat Release Hooks, has been published, in cooperation with Witherby Seamanship International, in response to these issues.
Following a chapter on a number of life-boat incidents going back to 1992, the pocket-sized guide offers readers information on the common problems encountered with life-boats and launching systems, measures to prevent problems occurring and the changes to the regulations relating to lifeboat release mechanisms.
