For a number of years the international LNG market seems to have settled on transportation in large tankers of 125.000 m3. But today, at a time when the demand for smaller parcels is growing, only very few LNG carriers of small size are available.

It seems as if the technology for building LNG tankers is no longer a point of discussion. However, we shall show that the principle of the gas tanker design with IMO type C tanks is worth to be considered for LNG ships as well. The paper deals with the technical advantages of LNG tankers to be constructed by using IMO TYPE C tanks for handling LNG at atmospheric conditions.

This design concept has been applied successfully to a vast number of gas carriers and will contribute to improvements of the overall safety of LNG tankers. It can also - if chosen within the correct parameters - secure excellent performance and commercial results.
