The LNG shipping industry has an exceptional safety record. At the beginning of the 21st century, the industry is expanding and changing in a way that it has not seen before. This expansion will bring with it many issues and challenges that the industry will have to respond to in order to maintain its excellent safety record.

One of the main issues is ensuring that the shortage of seagoing personnel with LNG experience does not adversely affect the expanding LNG fleet. At present, there are no industry accepted operational training standards specifically aimed at officers serving on LNG vessels. SIGTTO wished to maintain the quality of these officers and developed these LNG Operational Standards for officers, intending them to be adopted as the industry’s best practice standards. SIGTTO encourages operators to consider other standards that may be more suitable to specific operations, ships or trades.

The project began in 2005 with the first working groups drawing on the experience of the SIGTTO membership. The standards were approved by the SIGTTO board in November 2005.

These standards are a guide for the industry, and their implementation and adoption is not mandatory. However, they have been produced after consulting with the industry and represent the default best practice operational training standards for officers on board LNG vessels.

The standards were written using the competence based methodology, which is used by the STCW and throughout the industry in general. They cover all officer ranks on LNG vessels, including electricians and cargo engineers. They should be used to ensure that a common standard of minimum training is present throughout the industry.
