The building of large LPG carriers has mostly been based on ships with prismatic tanks operated under atmospheric conditions.

The major reasons to follow this line are:
• Easy design work
• Standard requirements regarding the cargoes to be transported
• Standard methods for cargo tank construction and testing
• Reasonable building cost levels.

Only very few cases are known to have deviated from this scheme due to very special conditions. Obviously ship designers and builders will only apply new ideas when:
• Forced to further reduce building cost in connection with improvement of ship performance
• Receiving new requirements for additional types of cargoes to be lifted
• New safety regulations appear.

In this paper we shall investigate into steps to increase the operational frame of the fully refrigerated gas carriers and at the same time to reduce building cost for standard purposes.
