Long term operating costs of Ethylene/LPG/VCM/NH3 carriers are a crucial factor for successful competition in the liquefied gas transportation market. Long term operating costs largely depend on the ability of yard designers, builders of gas installations and shipowners, to work out jointly an optimum solution with respect to the ship's flexibility and reliability and thereby to minimise the total operating costs in relation to projected income from transportation service.

The investment costs for Ethylene/LPG/VCM/NH3 carriers depend on various factors; the actual investment is about 3,500 US $/m3 transportation capacity for a 5,000 m3 gas carrier down to about 2,000 US $/m3 for a 20,000 m3 gas carrier. Capital costs are in the range between 50 and 60% and the fuel costs in the range between 15 and 20% of the total operating costs.

This paper discusses how these costs can be influenced by sound and economical design of the total system.
