Review from Nautilus UK's Telegraph, April Edition

Filing a gap on hatch cover safety….

There have been so many accidents arising from hatch cover problems, that it is something of a surprise to learn there is no publication – other than a couple of handbooks – that provides a comprehensive study of the subject.

Until now, that is. Marine surveyor Mike Wall has set out to fill the gap with his 178 page book Hatch Covers: Operation, Testing and Maintenance.

Well designed and laid out by Witherby Seamanship, the book goes from the basics of why Hatch Covers are needed (with instructions for a domestic experiment to prove the case!) to the principles and details of the various designs in use.

There’s information about the best ways of operating, testing and maintaining hatch covers, along with copious and well illustrated examples of some of the most common defects.

To underline the perils of ignoring the subject, the book includes a series of case studies showing just how badly things can go wrong when hatch covers are not cared for.

Before printing, the book was reviewed by a number of experts and interested parties-Including past and current bulk carrier masters- and it is clear that the end result is practical, professional and probably essential piece of reading.

Hatch Covers: Operation, Testing and Maintenance by Mike Wall. (ISBN 978 185609 3446) Costs £50 and is published by Witherby Seamanship.
