Classification societies are expected to work as independent and impartial surveyors. This is actually one of the foundation stones of their activity, which is reflected in their code of ethics: " a classification society may not be considered as a consulting engineer, naval architect or shipbuilder and cannot assume the obligations incumbent on such functions, even though its experience enables it to answer enquiries concerning matters not covered by its rules, guidance notes and documents".

The main object of their work is to supply information on the reliability of merchant vessels and floating installations, and this activity is increasingly requiring their involvement in the process of designing, building and operating merchant vessels and offshore units. Classification societies are also deeply involved in the statutory activities, which represent the implementation of the international conventions ratified by the governments on behalf of their flag administrations. In this respect, it is worth mentioning the significant participation of the classification societies in the development and the implementation of the new safety instruments continuously elaborated by the IMO, such as the ISM code for instance.

And finally, classification societies were also led to develop their ability to provide specific services additional to classification to respond to the demand of the industry, mainly in the field of technical studies and calculations.

This is the subject of the present paper, where we will expose our views on the role a classification society can play in the various aspects of the assistance in the field of LNG carriers during their successive life cycles, from their construction to their de-commissioning, and further illustrate the topic with its practical experience applied on some typical cases such as :
• some specific calculations on the structural elements of the hull or of the containment system of LNG carriers,
• design assessment and supervision of the construction of the LNG carriers,
• condition assessment and life extension studies of LNG carriers.
