20 years of research, development and engineering experience in LNG sea transportation have led to major improvements in several aspects with only minor changes in basic design.

After a brief reminder of the GT standard design, the present paper exposes the main results of studies conducted in close co-operation with Shipbuilders, Shipowners, Classification Societies and Research Institutes, concerning the following aspects:
1 SERVICE EXPERIENCE AND DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS: The latest version of the Gaz-Transport system based on trials with full scale tanks and advanced fatigue analysis theory (cargo tank shape and secondary barrier).
2 INSTALLATION PROCESSES OF THE INVAR TANKS: The top quality work due to the ever increasing use of highly automated installation equipment, particularly for the welding of joints.
3 HIGH DEGREE OF SAFETY IN SERVICE: The major performances of safety and reliability offered by an LNG carrier equipped with Invar cargo tanks.
4 OPERATING COSTS AND ENERGY SAVING: A proven system able to reduce the average boil off rate to 0.12% on a complete round trip of a 125,000 m3 LNG carrier (IMCO rules basis).
