This paper is based on a comprehensive study carried out by Det norske Veritas on behalf of Gotaas-Larsen of their fleet of 5 LNG carriers, having accumulated a total of 58 ship years of operation. These vessels have all independent spherical cargo tanks of Moss-Rosenberg Verft (MRV) design

The basic objective of the study was to:
i) determine and evaluate the condition of the Gotaas-Larsen fleet of LNG carriers.
ii) evaluate these vessels' potential for extended lifetime beyond 20 years.

Vessels included in the study are classed with DnVC and their age ranged between 8 and 13 years, with an average of about 11,6 years.

Considerations of useful service life of vessels includes elements such as safety and economy and these are dealt with in the paper, with emphasis on technical and safety aspects.
