The first priority on all ships, and in particular on those of a more specialised nature, is to provide a comprehensive, ongoing safety training programme to cater for all personnel, from the most senior to the most junior, and to integrate this training to achieve a high standard of safety throughout. It is not only essential that all personnel are fully conversant with the potential hazards of cargo operations during, for example, loading and discharging, but also with the risk factors in the day to day working routines onboard.

All aspects of safety awareness should be brought to the attention of personnel from the moment of their first contact with the ship, including the attitudes of existing trained crew members. In this way the feeling of responsibility is shared by all. This provides higher safety standards and a better level of teamwork at all times.
