This book is about training and learning on board ship. It offers guidance and advice for seagoing and shore personnel who have an interest in making sure that onboard training is effective, lively, relevant and motivating, and thus fulfilling and rewarding for everyone involved.

Len A Holder, Extra Master, MPhil, Training Consultant. Len served at sea for 10 years and came ashore to undertake study and research at Liverpool Polytechnic, becoming Director of the School of Engineering and Technology Management. He was a founder member of the Nautical Institute, serving as President from 1993 to 1996, and was Master of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners from 2000 to 2001. At the time of his death in 2014, Len was Chairman of Videotel Marine International.

Dr Chris Haughton, EdD MA BA CertEd PGCC QTLS Master Mariner FNI FSET. Chris went to sea in 1971 and qualified as a Class 1 Master Mariner in 1982. On coming ashore, he went into teaching, becoming Head of School at the Nautical Campus in Fleetwood. He moved on to become Deputy Managing Director of Videotel Marine International. In 2003, Chris founded Haughton Maritime Ltd, which provides maritime training and management consultancy services.
